Today, as Americans pause to observe Good Friday, we are reminded of the ultimate sacrifice—one that forever changed the course of human history. It is a day of solemn reflection on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, who willingly endured suffering and death so that mankind could know redemption and eternal life. For those of us who cherish the principles of liberty, limited government, and individual responsibility, this sacred day also invites a deeper contemplation of the spiritual and moral foundations of our Republic.
At the heart of Good Friday lies a powerful truth: freedom comes at a cost. Just as Christ gave His life to set us free from the bondage of sin, the Founders of our nation risked everything to secure freedom from tyranny. They understood, as we must today, that liberty cannot survive apart from virtue—and virtue is impossible without moral truth.
The Declaration of Independence, signed just over 1,700 years after that dark Friday in Jerusalem, proclaims that our rights are "endowed by our Creator." This foundational belief—that our freedoms are not granted by kings or governments but by God Himself—draws a direct line from the Cross to the Constitution. Without the divine authority recognized in the teachings of Scripture, there would be no enduring basis for the rights we hold dear.
It is no coincidence that the Constitution, written by men deeply influenced by the Judeo-Christian worldview, establishes a system of government rooted in checks and balances. The Founders understood human nature—its capacity for both greatness and corruption—and they knew that only a virtuous citizenry, guided by faith and moral clarity, could maintain a free society.
Good Friday reminds us that sacrificial love is the bedrock of lasting freedom. As citizens, we must be willing to stand for truth, to defend our Constitution, and to teach the next generation about the values that have preserved this Republic for nearly 250 years.
Organizations like the 917 Society are at the forefront of this mission—ensuring that every 8th grader in America receives a personal copy of the U.S. Constitution, and more importantly, understands its meaning.
As we reflect on the Cross today, let us also renew our commitment to the cause of liberty. Let us remember that preserving freedom requires more than patriotism—it requires courage, conviction, and a deep-rooted belief in the dignity of every person, made in the image of God.
May this Good Friday serve as a solemn reminder not only of Christ’s sacrifice, but also of our sacred duty to protect the liberties His truth has made possible.
