How NGOs Waste Taxpayer Money and Undermine Our Nation's Priorities

In a time when our national debt is skyrocketing and hard-working Americans are forced to tighten their belts, one area that continues to drain taxpayer dollars is the reckless funding of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). While NGOs often present themselves as forces for good, too many are poorly managed, wasteful, or promote agendas that run contrary to the interests of our nation.

The federal government and various international bodies pour billions of dollars into NGOs every year. These organizations often claim to promote humanitarian causes, yet they frequently operate with little accountability, little oversight, and in many cases, little benefit to American citizens. This is a system ripe for abuse, and it’s our tax dollars footing the bill.

Unaccountable and Overfunded

NGOs often operate in a shadowy zone between government and the private sector, relying on public funding but exempt from the accountability that government agencies should face. The lack of oversight means that money is funneled into causes that are, at best, inefficient and, at worst, actively harmful to the American way of life.

Consider this: A significant portion of taxpayer-funded NGO activity is directed abroad, supposedly to help struggling nations. Yet many of these countries are led by corrupt regimes that siphon off this money for their own gain, with little of it reaching those in need. Meanwhile, here at home, veterans struggle to get medical care, schools lack funding, and our own infrastructure crumbles.

Pushing Political Agendas

The problem isn’t just inefficiency—many NGOs actively work against the core values of American conservatism. For example, a large number of environmental NGOs receive government funding and then use that money to push radical climate agendas. These groups lobby for extreme regulations that hurt American businesses and job creators, all while being propped up by U.S. tax dollars.

Similarly, organizations that promote open borders or attack the traditional family structure often receive government grants, allowing them to undermine the very fabric of our society from within. Taxpayer money should never be used to finance political or ideological movements that erode American sovereignty and values.

Priorities at Home

What is needed is a drastic reassessment of where taxpayer money is going. Instead of funding questionable foreign projects or enabling political activism, those resources could be redirected to strengthening our borders, providing care for our veterans, rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, and supporting American families.

NGOs may have a role to play in society, but that role should never be dependent on the American taxpayer. It is time for Congress to demand accountability, cut waste, and stop funneling billions of dollars into organizations that fail to align with American interests.

A Call for Oversight

Americans must demand more from their government. There is nothing wrong with charity or private organizations supporting causes they believe in, but this must be done with private funds—not taxpayer money. True patriotism involves looking out for our own country first and ensuring that every dollar spent enhances, not undermines, our values.

By reining in the unchecked spending on NGOs, we can start to reclaim our national priorities and restore fiscal sanity. The 917 Society is on a mission to honor and celebrate Constitution Day per Federal Mandate 108-447 and provide Constitution Education. However, as a 501c3 non-profit, The 917 Society does not accept taxpayer funds to support its mission of Constitution Education but relies on private donors.
